Video calls with your doctor

First Opinion is a rapidly growing telemedicine app that makes it easy to talk to a doctor. I worked closely with company leadership, product managers, engineers and a physician to build this feature and ensure the experience was top notch.

Challenge

In the First Opinion app people can easily message a doctor for education on symptoms, and get ideas of what to try at home. But doctors and patients needed to be able to talk over a video call so patients could get a full diagnosis and a treatment plan, including prescriptions. This video experience needed to work within the existing consumer iOS app, and the doctor web app.

Approach

After aligning with the team on the problem, I did a survey of every video call service I could get my hands on – Facetime, Google Hangout, Skype, Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, and more. Our service needed to feel similar to other video calls, but be optimized for health discussions. I sketched ideas, weighed the pros and cons of various solutions with the team and went through several iterations.

Outcome

Once we landed on the winning solution I created high fidelity designs, exported assets, coordinated with engineers as they built the feature, and helped out with quality testing. The platform is now used daily for doctor/patient video calls. Our doctors have been extremely satisfied with the new capabilities the platform gives them.
